Even though he's still fighting a bout with pancreatic cancer, Patrick Swayze tells the New York Times in an e-mail, “I can’t wait to get to work on this!”

The "this" he refers to is a brand new crime-drama for A&E and Sony Pictures Television called 'The Beast'.

There was only one day left before A&E was to announce 'The Beast' for the new Fall lineup when Swayze told them he was sick. What crap for timing, BUT he's been kicking ass as far as his treatment goes, and he's been given the green-light from his doctors. Sweet!

Swayze will play an FBI agent with a colorful past, according to Bob DeBitto, A&E’s executive vice president and general manager.

Sony studio executive Jamie Erlicht told Access Hollywood,

“He was very passionate about the role,” “He called us personally after he got the news and he told us: ‘Guys, I have some horrible news. But if you can be patient and stand by me, I’m going to come back and do the show.’ ”

“He said: ‘I’m in great condition. I’m a cowboy. I’m a dancer. I’ll beat this,’” Sony executive Zack Van Amburg added.

The show will be shot in Chicago.

Swayze’s doctors are in California, but will monitor him closely, with the aide of Chicago doctors, the Times reported.

Access Hollywood confirms it...

The new celebrity pals departed from Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif., on Thursday morning.

Back in March, the two were spotted having dinner together at the Russian restaurant, Romanov, in Studio City.

According to a report in People, a source said the two are “just going away for a few days to relax.”

It is believed they will be staying at Gibson’s home in Costa Rica.

Britney and Mel used to be neighbors in Malibu.

And, E! Online says this...

The unlikely, but not unprecedented, duo was joined on their trip by Spears' father, Jamie, and Gibson's wife, Robyn.

Though the exact nature of the trip is not yet known, it appears to be nothing more than a friendly weekend getaway, with a source telling E! News the group departed from Los Angeles with the intention of hanging out at Gibson's Costa Rica property "for a couple days."

The source also told E! News the showbiz pair's budding relationship has been nurtured of late by attorney Blair Berk, who repped Gibson in his infamous DUI arrest and who is currently representing Spears' parents in their various legal entanglements.

More recently, Gibson has been described as "mentoring" the troubled pop star and that the duo has discussed "a getaway" of some sort.

The surprising pair first raised eyebrows last March, when they, along with a group of mutual friends, were spotted dining together at Studio City eatery Romanov.
